This is the final post in a series about the United Nations Development Goals. UN member nations and their NGO partners are hard at work trying to meet these seventeen benchmarks for eradicating global poverty by the year 2030. Through our fair trade partnerships with artisan groups in the developing world, Global Handmade Hope is helping to alleviate global poverty, and we’re proud to be a part of this movement that the UN started.
Today, we’ll discuss goals 16 and 17.
GOAL SIXTEEN: Promote just, peaceful, and inclusive societies.
This goal seeks to strengthen institutions in developing countries, which will help end corruption, disrupt trafficking, and eliminate child labor, among many other things. Promoting peace and justice for all is essential for building equitable societies and promoting sustainable development. Many of the partners we work with provide stability to the communities where our products are made, in countries that are in many ways lacking the rule of law. Our partners in Asia, for instance, work with mothers of children who might otherwise be vulnerable to child traffickers, providing their parents with a living wage and allowing their children to instead attend school. Here is one our favorite products made by our Asian partners.
GOAL SEVENTEEN: Revitalize the global partnership for sustainable development.
According to the UN, “A successful sustainable development agenda requires partnerships between governments, the private sector, and civil society. These inclusive partnerships [are] built upon principles and values, a shared vision, and shared goals that place people and the planet at the center.” We’ve said it several times throughout this series, but we at Global Handmade Hope are so proud to see the impact of our fair trade partnerships has on the UN’s efforts to meet these goals. Our partners on the ground in the developing world are doing amazing work, bringing jobs to artisan communities, empowering women and the disabled to live an empowered life, supporting education for the next generation, and protecting the environment. We couldn’t be more proud of the organizations we work with!
